The scam involves a group of individuals posing as street vendors who claim to offer free drinks and clear cups to thirsty tourists. People, especially the young and adventurous, often fall prey to their charm, thinking that they are simply being given a kind gesture. However, their real intention is far from generous.
As soon as a tourist accepts the drink, the vendor hands them a glass with a small chip or a crack, usually not visible to the naked eye. When the tourist leaves the scene, the real scam unfolds. They pressure the unsuspecting tourist to settle the cost or face the consequences of a high fine, usually paid on the spot.
To avoid falling victim to this cunning scam, travelers should be vigilant and offers polite refusals when given a free drink from anyone they do not know. If the scammer insists on handing over the drink, politely decline by saying “Non, merci”, or perhaps a firm “Non, je n’ai pas besoin”, while smiling. A popular trick to counter this scam is to use a straw – as this can’t break.
